Local Australian Artist Michael Morgan on Armellini Pipes-
“The best pipes possible, made out of the best materials possible, at the lowest price possible.”
This was the philosophy of the late Mauro Armellini, and this tradition is being carried on in the Northern Italian town of Barasgo by his daughter Wilma and son Matteo.
These well shaped pipes are made of aged Mediterranean Briar. I have recently acquired four.
They are rugged, well crafted examples of the pipe-makers art. The rusticated finishes are quite unique. For top of the range examples, Wilma Armellini recommends the “Freehand” Fatto & Mano “Suprema” hand made pipes.
These superb pipes all have a thread that runs through the pipe with accompanying red wax seal which assures you that this particular pipe has been recommended and passed by the makers.
I think my “Free Hand Bamboo” is a ‘sculptural handful.’ As the “Free Hand Gold” is an event, the new Calabash is a friendly, well shaped example of a good smoker with a rustic feel and pleasant colour. The sandblasted “Large Bent Calabash” is comfortable to hold and smoke. I can imagine a winter in Norway or Austria with this one!!
Armellini pipes are production pipes, apart from any individual ‘one offs,’ fulfilling the philosophy of their founder Mauro.
I consider them to be of very good value to purchase. For the novice pipe smoker or the avid collector of pipes they are excellent.
I will add more to my collection.
MICHAEL MORGAN.
